Just like your heart, your brain operates with rhythmic pulses of electricity. Just as you train your heart when you exercise, you can train your brain using technology in the same way that you would use training equipment for your body.

The brain produces electrical impulses all the time. These electrical signals differ in frequencies and amplitude.
Amplitude is the power of the electrical signal, measured in micro voltage and the frequency is the speed of electrical signals measured in cycles per second, or hertz.

Alpha,Beta,Theta, and Delta are the main categories of brainwaves
It is the combination of these brainwave signals that determines the state of consciousness of an individual at any given time. Whilst there is a combination of signals going on at any moment, one will be more predominant depending on your state.

the functions of the Specific Brainwaves

delta
l0.5 -3Hz Sleep
Delta brainwaves are predominant in sleep. Excessive delta in wakefulness can be the cause of some problems, for example ADHD or learning disorders.

theta
3 - 7 Hz  Creative-Intuitive
It is through our slow brainwaves that creativity arises. The slow brainwaves are where our memories and unconscious processes occur, our slow brainwaves give  depth to our meditation practice. However, an excess of slow brainwaves( low frequencies) in certain locations in the brain causes problems ranging from poor concentration to depression.
Together with Alpha, Theta provides profundity in meditation.

alpha
8-12 Hz Zone States
Alpha is the bridge between the ‘unconscious’ and ‘conscious’ mind states.  Alpha is associated with meditative states. Alpha also allows us to remember our meditation experience. Alpha gives us a sense of peace or inner calm. It is best described as ‘relaxed, detached awareness’. It is pure awareness, corresponding to peak mental states in our everyday life.

beta
1. Low Beta 12-15 Hz
Relaxation, a state of being internally orientated. When seen in the sensorimoter strip low beta is referred to as SMR.
SMR training increases stillness and decreases movement.
Presence of low beta frequency allows our body and mind to rest.

2. Beta 15 - 21 Hz
Logical Rational
Beta is associated with being focused, analytical and externally oriented, though they may also be present when you are internally or externally focused. Too much in the wrong areas can cause obsessive and compulsive behaviours, depression and anxiety.

3. High Beta 21-32 Hz
High beta is associated with cognitive processing, worry, anxiety, over thinking, ruminating and OCD.

Gamma brainwaves 40Hz
Synchronous Gama has been found during problem solving. It seems to help organize the brain, promote learning and allow for mental sharpness.

Recently, high levels of Gama have been seen in Tibetan monks when meditating on loving compassion.

"A high performance mind is one that can enter at will the state of consciousness that is most beneficial and most desirable for any given circumstance."
Anna Wise, late author and a leading authority on training for enhancing performance of brain.

Whilst many people desire a peak performance state, a mind clear of incessant rational processing, they often believe that it is not possible to control their state of consciousness, except through years of intense training and meditation.  Thanks to the advancement in neuroscience, you can achieve such calm, clear, and fulfilled mental states within a short period of time with the help of neurofeedback training of brainwaves.

Neurofeedback technology allows you to shift to appropriate and desired states of mind by learning how to control the electrical activity of your brain. This training can be practiced in a manner that will fit your time schedule.
By producing your optimum brainwave patterns, you can benefit from increased focus, relaxation, creativity and stress management for a more emotionally fulfilled life.
